4 Nelson, Jan. 22, 2.45 p.m. uckland news has been received to Jan. 20. There are conflicting statements in the papers about Kooti. It appears certain that he offered to surrender conditionally, and that the Government refused. Mr ZPirth saw Kooti, who said that he considered the time for fighting had ceased ; if the Pakeha would let him alone, he would cease killing and settle down quietly and cultivate at Tapapa with Hakaria. He wants bygones to be by-gones, but if "jumped on " from all sides, he will fight. He wished to see " his friend " Mr M'Lean and talk. Kooti followed this up by writing a telegram for Dr Pollen, in substance as above. Kooti, in the telegram, alludes to his being hemmed in.^/The Cross says that Kooti has been driven by our arms to his present position, and that the King remains neutral, to keep the fighting from his land. The King, in effect, says — "Do not attack Kooti on my land ; I want peace ; " and to Kooti he says — " Leave my district ; do no evil in it." The Thames Times says that the Hau-haus who have left the Upper Thames are supposed to have gone to join Kooti. Eapata, a friendly chief, sent for the Europeans, and a lot of diggers went to help to defend him against Kooti. Vague rumours are current about Kooti's intentions ; he is still at Tapapa, and some think he wiU enter Ohinemuri, in which case our forces will follow, and the country there will be opened. The newspapers condemn the withdrawal of the troops. Napiee, Jan. 22, 5.40 p.m. Colonel M'Donnell's forces reached Waimahana, near the Patetere country, on the 20th ; Topia and Kemp, with 370 : men reached there the same day, and the whole advanced on the 21st. Col. M'Donnell is in communication with Mr M'Lean at Tauranga. A body of Arawas is advancing upon Patetere, by Purakau. Colonel Fraser and force advance by Wakamarama. These movements are in concert with those of Col. M'Donnell. Kooti attacked a Ngatiraukawa settlement called Kokako, near Tapapa, and captured all the people except two men, who carried the news to Eotorua. / '
