CRICKET.

/A match at~ cricket between the Cavalry and Engineers was played in Hagley Park yesterday, resulting in an easy win for the former. The tournament originated from the inability of the Cavalry lo fire their return match with the Engineers in consequence of having no carbines, and may certainly be deemed a pleasant alternative for settling the friendly rivalry between the two corps. The Engineers with the rifle were superior to their opponents who have now, fcnwever, redeemed their prestige by cri "ketjj, TBtTwickets were pitched at an early hour, and Mr G. Oram of the Clarendon provided the requisite refreshments. The game was from the first looked upon more from an amusement point of view than as a display of science, and this was really the result, although, in exceptional cases, as shown by two or three large scores, and the number of wickets taken by some of the bowlers, there was some very creditable play. Messrs Brittan and Anson were in themselves a legion for the Cavalry, and although Sergt. Turner made a gallant stand in each innings for the Engineers— going in first in one, and carrying his bat out at the end for a beautifully plajed 42 — and Lieut. Pavitt both bowled and batted well, the riounted men were too strong to be beaten. The match caused a great deal of interest, and a large number of persons visited the ground during the day.
