"Westpoet, Dec. 5. A fire broke out last night at twenty minutes past ten o'clock, and destroyed an entire block of buildings, from Molesworth to Freeman streets— the finest block of buildings in Westport. The fire was caused by tbe bursting of a kerosine lamp at Anslow's, a draper. Nothing whatever was saved at Anslow's ; about one half the stock in the block, on an average, was saved. The following is a list of the places -destroyed : — Pitt's offices. Smyth's Tramway Hotel. Rockstrow's residence. Fleming and Murray's drapery establishment. Golden Age Hotel. Anslow ? s drapery establishment. Trumble's Theatre Boyal. Home's tobacconist's establishment. Austin's Sportsman's Arms. Berung's Imperial Hotel. Boberts and Simpson's boot and •shoe store. "White's chemist's shop. Mr Braith waite's Prince Alfred Hotel . Schulhoffs tobacconist's shop. Southern's drapery establishment. Freith and Greig's importers' establishment. Falla's importer's store. And several smaller buildings. The value of the property destroyed is estimated at £15,000 to £20,000. Tbere was not a breath of wind, or nothing could have been saved in any portion of the town to leeward of the fire. The amount stated as the actual loss is supposed to be represented by the stock destroyed ih two or three ■drapers' establishments.
