CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) Vaobanct. — Flora Martin, who appeared with two young children, in a most destitute and ragged condition, was brought up in custody, charged with this offence. Constable Kennedy proved to finding the three lying in an unoccupied house last night, the woman in a beastly state of intoxication, and the children quite wet from the rain. J. Fuchs, landlord of the WelHngton Hotel, proved to having turned the prisoner out of his house fur improper conduct ; and Sergeant McKnight made a very bad report of prisoner's conduct whilst she was resident in Lyttelton, where she had been sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and since which she had left that town. Her husband had left her some time ago, and had not since been heard of. The prisoner made no defence, and, after being severely censured by his Worship, was committed to two months' imprisonment at hard labour. ROBBEBT FROM THB PERSON. — James Brown, on remand from Otago, where he had been arrested upon a warrant sent from Christchurch, was brought up in custody, charged with having stolen a cheque from a man at the Ashburton. Inspector Pender said the stolen property had beeu recovered, but the necessary witnesses being scattered over the southern part of the province, it would be necessary to ask a remand for a few days. Sergeant Horniman proved to prisoner being the person named in the warrant, and that the cheque had been traced to him. His Worship accordingly remanded the case until Tuesday next-— the prisoner himself raising no objection to such a proceeding.
