. CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) A Dissolute Husband. — John O'Connell was brought up in custody, charged with having violently assaulted and threatened his wife and family. From the evidence of complainant, supported by that of her son and daughter, it appeared that prisoner had gone home intoxicated, and taking up a knife, threatened to strike one of the children with it. He had frequently ill-used complainant, and the whole family were evidently in great f ear' of personal injury. Inspector Pender Baid it was not loug since that prisoner was brought up on the information of his son for violent conduct, and the police had frequently to interfere between him and his family. Prisoner denied having raised his hand to any of them in the instance under considerationby the Court, and promised, if set at liberty, that he would refrain from drink, and not annoy either his wife or children again. His Worship said, hi face of what the Bench knew, this could not be accepted; but prisoner would be remanded until Monday, in order that the previous convictions against him migbt be brought up and considered in passing sentence upon him. It was most out-
rageous that: a whole family should thus be kept in dread of his conduct, and he would have : to be severely dealt with.
