AUSTRALASIAN TOPICS.

. PRESERVED MEAT. It has been announced that, some time during the present month, a monster dinner of viands prepared from Australian preserved meats will be given in the Agricultural-hall, or some other spacious building, to about 1500 working people ; the Earl of Denbigh has consented to preside. A cargo of fresh beef and mutton, preserved in ice, arrived at Rio from the Kiver Plate, early in July, as an experiment to ascertain whether a trade could be established. Messrs J. M'Call and Co. have written to the papers to say that the operations of the Melbourne Meat-preserving Company have been resumed, and also to intimate that they are authorised to place in this country, at par, 3000 £5 shares of unallotted capital. Mr C. G. Tindal also writes to correct The Times, which had ascribed the honour of priority to a company not entitled to it. The merit of being the " pioneers in the tra _c," belongs, it appears, to the Australian Meat Company of -tamornie. This iB a matter of small concern to a hungry nation. Give us good meat, in abundance, at a' fair price, and we will ask no questions about who was firat, or who was last in the field.
