,*. (From the Daily Times, Sept. 33 to Oct. 1, inclusive.") The Maoris at Moeraki have, it is said, removed inland from the beach at that p ace, through fe.ir of the. tidal disturbances expected. We understand that Woodruffe's troupe of American Glussblowers, who arrived in Duiiedin hy the Tararua, will open at the Masonic Hall on Oct. 2. The first cricket match of the season will be played on Oct. 2, by two elevens of the Citizens' Club, the players chosen for the two sides being respectively married and single. Mr F. 1". Kich, M.U.H., addressed a numerous meeting of his constituents at Davis' Hotel, Palmerston, on the 23rd ult. The chair was occupied hy Mr Dillon Bell. The meeting is described hy the Wtukouaiti Herald as a " hot " one, and a resolution calling on Mr Rich to resign was carried. A fire, by which the bonded warehouse of Mr J. Ros J , Invercargiil, was destroyed, took place on Sunday last. The fire had gained so strong a hold before the Brigade arrived that they were unable to do anj thing to slay it. ravages, and were compelled lo leave the building to its fate 'I he loss is estimated et several thousand pounds, which is only partially covered by insurance. At an inquest into the cause of the fire, held on Tuesday last, the jury returned un open verdict. The numerous races now in operation in the neighbourhood of Charleston are said to be rapidly filling up the harbour there with the sand and earth carried down by them in solution. The quantity of detritus thus deposited there every week ia estimated at several hundreds of tons. The subject of fl «x dressing has been occupying a good deal of attention in tho West Taieri district of late. A fl.ix-mill is about to be erected by Messrs Brown and Harrington, Manngatua, to be driven by steam power. Another is also about to be erected in the same neighbourhood, in whic'i water will be the motive power employed.
