" How is your husband this afternoon, Mrs Mason ? " " Why, the doctor says if he lives till morning he shall have some hopes of him; but if he don't he must give him up 1 " Women have the marvellous faculty of appearing warm when they are cold, and wearing a sunny face when they have an icy heart. This they get part by nature and part by art. A small tradesman was invited to a parish dinner, and a dish of icecream was placed before him. It was a new dish to him. He tasted it, then beckoned to the waiter, and said, " This is a very good pudding, but do you know its froze ? " A young gentleman, five years of age, was approached with childish endearment by an infant of eighteen months. " Don't you see," said the mother, " that the baby wants to kiss you ? " " Yes," replied young maturity, " that's because he takes me for his papa." Thomas Moore, the poet, observing himself to be eyed by two pretty young ladies, inquired of a friend, who was near enough to hear their remarks, what it was they said of him. " Why, the tall one said she was delighted to have the opportunity of looking upon so celebrated a personage." " Indeed ! " said the graiifled little fellow; "and did she say anything more?" "Yes; she said she was the more pleased because she had taken in your celebrated almanac for the last five or six years!"
