GENERAL SUMMARY.
Loxnox, July 16. The Australian June mails via Marssilles were delivered on July 12. The Queen is at Windsor. The Court is. shortly going to Osborne House, then to Balmoral. The Viceroy of Egypt arrived iv London on June 22. He proceeded at once to Buckingham Palace, which had been prepared for his reception. His visit extended to July 1, and during his stay there were great festivities on an extensive scale. The Canadian Dominion Parliament was prorogued at Ottawa on June 22. j The House of Commons have nominated a Select Committee to inquire ! into the cause of the great and exces-
sive expenditure on the Abyssinian war. The Volunteers encampment was opened afc Wimbledon on July 3. The Queen's Prize was won by Angus Cameron, of fche 6th Inverness Volunteers. His score was 71. The same gentleman won the prize iv 1566. England won the International prize against Scotland and Ireland. Scotlaud won the Elcho Challenge Shield. Ire'and came second ; Eugland last. A grand review of Volunteers is to be held afc Wimbledon on July 17. The meeting of the shareholders of the Bank of South Australia took place on June 29. A dividend of 10 per cent, was announced. The Australian and New Zealand Banks havo agreed, with one exception, to adopt a re-exchange of 10 per cent, on bills returned dishonoured, instead of 20 per cent , as hitherto. It was resolved that recommeudatious should be forwarded by fche present mail for all colonial establishments to agree to a similar charge ou dishonoured bills returned from Engluud. The Eton and Harrow cricket match was played on July 9 and 10. Eton won in one innings. The French Atlantic cable has been successfully laid between Brest and St. Pierre. A message was sent through to the Emperor of the French, announcing the completion of the enterprise thus far. A riot took place at Portadown, in county Armagh, on July 1. The polieo fired ou the mob with fatal effect. The estates of the Duke of Newcastle, including Clumber Park aud House, have been sold. Proceedings in bankruptcy have been taken against him. The Earl of Kellie has beeu elected a Scotch representative peer. The Government of Canada agreed to the terms proposed for the cession of the Hudson Bay Company's territory to the Dominion of Canada. A riot took place at New York on July 12, during a procession of Orangemen. They were attacked by a party of Catholics, and thirty persons were injured. The Duke of Ediuburgh is appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the order of St Michael and Sfc George. The Irish Church Bill was read a second time in the Lords on June 18. The Lurds introduced many amendments. The date of disestablishment was altered to May. 1871. The glebes in Ulster were granted to the clergy, and all glebe houses in Irelaud were given to the Church free of charge. They also proposed to endow fche Catholic priests and Presbyterian ministers. The bill was returned to the House of Commons last night, when Mr Gladstone announced that he was resolved to reject nearly all the amendments made by the Lords. The Life Peerages Bill was rejected by the Lords on July 8. The Marquis of Hartington brought in a bill empowering the Government to purchase the telegraph lines, on July 5. Mr Bright and Mr W. S. Forster resigned their membership of the Reform Club, in consequence of the black-balling of Mr Smalley, of the New York Tribune, whom they had proposed. The Lord Mayor gave his annual dinner to Ministers on July 9. The principal speakers were Mr Gladstone, Lord Hatherley, and Mr Bruce. Disturbances were expected in Irelaud on July 12, but the Orange celebrations on that day passed off quietly except at Belfast, where there was some rioting. The auuual dinner of fche Cobden Club was held afc Greenwich on July 10.. Tbe Duke of Argyle presided. The Emperor of the French sent a message to the Corps Legislatif, granting various reforms, on which M. Rouher and the rest of the Ministry resigned. Serrano was sworn in as Regent of Spain on July 18. Some slight changes were made in the Ministry and in the Customs. The Prussian Diet closed afc Berlin on July 22. Obituary.— Dr Todd, Rev. G.
