This Day. (Before C. C. Bowen, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness. — James Anderson was brought up, charged with having been drunk and disorderly on Saturday night last. A fine of 10s was imposed. liAßCEnr. —Margaret Malcolm was brought up on a charge of haying stolen several articles of wearing apparel from a line on premises in Chester street. Sergt. McKnight deposed that he arrested prisoner in a brothel, in Kilmore street, kept by Catherine Greaves and Hetty Baraes, on. the previous evening, and charged her with having stolen the articles in question ; after cautioning her, prisoner stated that she didn't know where she got them, as she was drunk. Mrs Edward Johnaton, living in Chester' street, deposed that the articles produced in Court (which she identified) were stolen from her premises on Friday last. The bundle now produced contained all the articles that had been stolen ; did not know their value. Eletty Barnes stated that the prisoner had come to her house with a bundle; inquired what she had got, and the prisoner replied, " It was all right," and passed into the backkitchen, where she left the bundle; knew nothing further about it until the police went to her house. By prisoner: You were drunk when you brought the bundle to my house. The prisoner had nothing to say in defence, beyond the plea of drunkenness. His Worship said he observed the prisoner had been before the Court on a charge of larceny on a former occasion. Inspector Tender : Two years ago, your Worship. His Worship: On that occasion you were very,lightly dealt with, it being yourfirst offence; but you were cautioned that if you offended again, you would receivea severer punishment. Drunkenness is no excuse for crime. You must be imprisoned for six months at hard labour.
