LYTTELTON. This Day. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Larceny from a Dwelling-house. — John Martin was charged with this offence. David Ramsay deposed: lam Bergeant of police at Akaroa. I received information that a man had broken into a hut and stolen some property. I followed the prisoner, on Wednesday last, up to Christchurch, and arrested him, telling him the charge. He said he hnd purchased the property on the road. I found the property produced in Eagle's boardinghouse, Christchurch. The prisoner claimed the goods produced. Adam Chalmers, stonemason, Lyttelton, said : I waa engaged at work in Charteris Bay three weeks since. I ha"c a hut there. I left the bay, but afterwards returned, and found that a window had been torn open. I missed several thingsstores, a tent, and a belt. I value the goods at £3. The tent produced I. can swear to. Adam Chalmeis, son of former witness, said: I left the hut securely fastened; when I returned the window was broken open. I identify the tent and the shirt produced. By the Court: The hut is a sod one, with shingle roof. It bad a fireplace, and also a door, which is secured by a lock. There are four bunks in the hut. I am living in it now. John Moffatt gave similar evidence. On the. application of Sergt r^ardy, prisoner was. remanded for three days.
