PUDDING HILL.

Mr Maddock reports that he found gold in quartz taken from Pudding Hill, Spaxton Station, Upper Ashburton. He applied to the Government for protection and a prospector's claim. The Government could not give protection, but informed Mr Maddock that, in the event of a goldfield being proclaimed, his first application for a claim would be considered. To-day, the Government made a reserve of 2200 acres, for educational purposes, in the neighbourhood of Pudding Hill, which is also included in the reserve. A prospecting party is at work there.
