The Star. FRIDAY, JULY 16, 1868.

The news from the North Island, if true, is alarming. Bufc we think ifc must be either greatly exaggerated, or wholly incorrect. If Bewi had joined Te Kooti, or the chief who is known by that name, there would be no necessity for the latter going oa a mission to the King. At least, we are unable to reconcile the alleged mission of Kooti with Rewi's alleged adherence and well-known influence. Ifc may be that there is a split in the King's camp. Eewi may have become jealous of Tamati Ngapora, who appears rather conspicuously about the King now-a-days, and may have joined Kooti with some definite object in view. Altogether, we incline to believe that the Native news in our telegram is not strictly accurate. Native news seldom ia, for many sufficient reasons. The Natives are adepts in the art of spreading false reports about themselves, juat as they are expert in finding out all about our movements, our strength and weakness. Besides, the present is hardly the season wliich the Natives would choose for auy fresh movement of importanco. "While saying this, we must not forget that the recent abandonment of the expedition to Waikaremoana may have elated the Natives to such an extent as to precipitate half-formed plans. But there is a strong air of mere rumour about the news, and ifc is well fco hope for the best.
