Wellington, July 7, 7.55 p.m. In the Legislative Couucil, the Hon. Ernest Gray moved a resolution affirming the desirability of adhering to the self-reliant policy. Messrs Gisborne and Whitmore opposed the resolution, and the debate was adjourned. A call of the Council was made to-day, when eighteen members were reported to be absent. Wharematangi, chief of the Pakakohe hapu, has come into Patea, and given himself up with 41 followers. Nineteen are able-bodied armed men, the rest are old men and women. The Natives are rapidly erecting the Wanganui telegraph poles. Napieb, July 7, 8 p.m. Major Herrick has arrived at Napier from Wairoa, to receive instructions from Mr Ormond as to the future operations. Major Herrick has reconnoitred the enemy's position, and ascertained that they occupied three fortifications, and are evidently prepared for an attack.
