"Wellington, June 27, 5.15 p.m. A Maori express messenger — one of Wirihana's men from Taupo — arrived at "Wanganui on Friday, re porting Kooti, with 300 men, afc Tauranga, on the edge of Taupo lake, within 12 miles of Wirihana's settlement, and urging the Wangauui natives to send help, Wirihana having deemed it expedient to retire 60 miles, leaving a few scouts to watch the enemy. It is reported that Kooti intends to come down the Wanganui river to destroy the settlements. Kemp has sent 100 men to Taupo, and the Wanganui natives are much excited and alarmed. Napiee, Juue 27/5.50 p.m. Heu Heu is reported to have been taken prisoner by Kooti and burnt. Captain St George states that part of the Uriwera tribe has leffc Kooti, who he represents as only 140 strong Ifc is said that Kooti intends fco proceed by the west shore of Lake Taupo, to attack Haruru. Messengers from Kooti and Titoko have visited Topia, the Wanganui Hau-hau Chief, asking him to join them. Topia professes a desire to keep peace in his own district, but be l free to fight the King's battles elsewhere. It is feared that Kooti aud Titoko are acting on a concerted plan of operations. Major Noake and Hori Grey have captured 43 more rebels, making a total number of 172 prisoners of the Pakakohi hapu. Nothing definite is yet settled regarding the formation of the Ministry.
