RESIGNATION OF THE MINISTRY. Wellington, June 25, 7.40 p.m. Stafford announced thafc the Government had resigned, and only retained office till their successors were . appointed. ; Mr Fox said that he had been sent for, and had undertaken to form a -". Ministry^ The House adjourned to Tuesday. A meeting was held to-night of ■'"■ those who voted with Mr Stafford. It ■ was unanimously resolved to form a firm, united Opposition. Mr Stafford • was chosen to lead. A committee of six was appointed to manage the affairs of the party. They will not oppose factiously, but consider Government proposals on their merits. . Various rumours are afloat as to the new Ministry. Mr Cargill is the only Middle • Island, member spoken of as likely to join, probably as PostmasterGeneral. Tho Canterbury members hold aloof. The Ministry is likely to include Messrs Fox, Williamson, Featherston, Heaphy, Orraond or M'Lean, and Yogel. In the Legislative Council, Mr John Johnston. Col. Whitmore made a long speech in the Legislative Council in defence of his conduct, and in explanation of his operations. He declined to believe that the Maori King would ultimately join the rebels.
