THE LITTLE SHOE.
Laughing, and humming an idle air, I threw the drawer's contents aside ; | Trifles of old days I scattered there, And papers in haste untied. Struct, as it wore, by a random shot, I felt an old wound bleed anew, — Care'essly seeking I know not what, I came on a little shoe. Flashed on my memory, sadly sweet Bang out the merry "laugh of yoro Echoed the beat of those tiny feet, That pattered along the floor. Chubby round face, so demure and wise, Shone out with brow so angel-fair, Ei-eamy reflection of hare-bell eyes, And halo of golden hair. Pet names, and jokes of her infant play Struck on my heart wnh sudden blow LiPB, in the morn of one dreadful day, death, e'er the aun was low ! Poor little re v c ! bilef hoor of sport ! What shame of me if tears w.'U fall! Spring time of babyhood, oh, how short j This poor little shoe how Bma". !
