"Wellington, June 13, 5.10 p.m. The Governor and Dr Pollen are not expected till the 26th. In consequence of Dr Pollen's absence, the Legislative Council is unable to proceed with business, as there is no representative of the Government present: At the "Wairarapa Provincial Council nomination, yesterday, Mr Bunny said, that whatever the result of Mr Fox's motion might be, the Government intended an immediate dissolution. The Native quarrel at "Wairarapa still threatens. The Natives number 120, and are busy collecting arms. The Resident Magistrate advises the Government to arrest the leaders. Napier, June 13, 4.21 p.m. NrConstable Newland, accompanied by ft^carpenter, on June 10, was surprised by seven Hau-haus, in ambuscade, two miles on the "Wairoa Bide of Herrick's camp. Newland was shot dead, and afterwards tomahawked. The carpenter escaped by jumping on a trooper's horse. There is nothing fresh from Major StJohn. Twenty-five Natives go to Haroto to-morrow.
