A commission to open the Assembly has been left ready signed. A man named Jennings, hotelkeeper, Greytown, has committed suicide by taking strychnine — Temporary insanity. 1& meeting of the leading merchauts nas protested against the practice of the Customs in opening, weighing, measuring, aud marking all goods on the wharf, as inconvenient to importers, and unjust to private bonded warehouse keepers. A deputation was appointed to represent the matter to tue Inspector. The Waitotara, natives reported as being under the protection of friendlies at Putaki, are some who went up the river to avoid being forced to join Titoko. They were never in arms against us, as stated by the Wanganui papers. The writ for the Superintendent's election has been issued. A meeting of natives takes place at Otaki next Tuesday, to consult as to the telegraph line to Wanganui passing over native lands. Messrs Featherston, Eox, and others, are invited to be present. Napier, May 6, 7.50 p.m. The Lyttelton and St Kilda have arrived from Wairoa. Mr .Richmond is in the latter. 208 constabulary under Captain Newland, started last Sunday for Waikaremoana as an advance guard. The Ngatiporou 110 strong, under Eopata arrived yesterday in the Sfc Kilda, and landed this morning. These and the militia are to start in a day or two under Major Herrick. They will throw up one or two redoubts on their way, and expect to meet Colonel Whittnore at the Lake. Wairoa and Poverty Bay being left almost unprotected, the natives are sure to double on the troops. Dunedin, May 6, 6.48 p.m. Dr Jenuer lectured on Church Music last night. Mr Duncan's Miuistry comprises Mr George McLean, Secretary and Treasurer ; Mr Donald Eeid, Lands and Works and leader in the House ; Messrs Gillies and Duncan, members of the Executive, without office.
