AUCKLAND.
The following description is from the Auckland Punch: — " The Auckland world's a stage, And its inhabitants a sort of players : They've their Macreadys, and sham properties, And, in their turn, make many curious scenes, Ranging in seven phases: — First come the settlers, Messing and poking on their little farms ; And then the whining members with petitions And shining pimpled faces, creeping like snails Through what they fancy business. Then the officials, Sighing like furnaces, with a woeful boring For an increase of salary ; and then the lawyers, Full of strange oaths, sudden aud quick in quarrel, Seeking their bubble reputations Even in their clients' mouths. Then the J.P.'s— A goodly posse of a formal cut, Full of old saws and legal instances That they think suit their parts. The sixth lot shows The whitewashed, lean, and slippered storekeeper, A host of publicans, all bearded like the pard, With wind-bill currency a world too wide For a small bank. And, last of all, The City Board, or second childishness, Sans cash — sans credit — and sans everything."
