THE RACES.
The race meeting held this day in honour of the Royal visit has proved a most decided success. Pine weather, such as is rarely seen at this time of the year, the expected presence of the Prince, and the capital programme offered, served to collect one of the largest attendances we have seen on the course for some years. The racing was fair. The day must be noted as one of the principal incidents of the visit. His Royal Highness drove a four-horse drag on to the ground a little before one o'clock. He was attended by an escort of Yeomanry, and was enthusiastically greeted, both on alighting and on appearing at the front of the balcony. Previous to the first race, he descended to the saddling paddock, and continued from there to enjoy himself in a quiet, unostentatious manner. The Canterbury Steeplechase was won by Mr D. Middleton's Albatross; Merrimac second, Gilderoy third. The Galatea Handicap was won by Mr Garforth's Backbiter; Knottingley second, Lyndon third. | The Hurdle Race was won by Mr Barnard's Don Pedro ; Trump second.
