V April 11, 5.27 p.m. XThe Galatea arrived at noon, but owing to the mist was not signalled till in the. harbour. Commodore Lambert is oifboard. The Challenger is not coming. The Governor went on board th^e Galatea in the afternoon. The Duke will land publicly tomorrow, and will visit the South in! the Blanche^' Captain Richardson's force has reached Waipukurau. The Ngatiraukawa chiefs are reported to be greatly annoyed at its passage through their country. The Superintendent of Napier, Mr M'Lean, has just received a telegram sbating that Mohaka has been surprised by Hau-haus, and destroyed. Some settlers are supposed to be killed, and their ammunition seized. This is the first attack on the province of Hawke's Bay. Mohaka is 40 miles from Napier. The settlers of the surrounding districts are removing to Napier. Napieb, April 11, 3.10 p.m. The settlement of Mohaka, 40 miles from Napier, was attacked yesterday by Hau-haus, supposed to be under Te Waru. Several Europeans are reported to be killed, also a number of friendlies. Two boat-loads of refugees and a number overland have arrived in Napier. The chief of the friendlies is absent on an expedition from Wairoa, in quest of Te Waru, but the pah was defended vigorously by those left. It contains a large quantity ofammunition. Many persons are missing. To-day two boat-loads of armed men started for Mohaka, and all the first and second class militia and volunteers are to march there, also the mounted cavalry and volunteers. The town is deserted by the male population. A company of Constabulary which arrived overland from Wanganui will reach Puketapu near Napier to-night, and proceed to Mohaka instead of Taupo as intended. It is feared that this is a second edition of the Poverty Bay massacre. Dunedin, April 11, 5.10 p.m. The Art Exhibition was closed yesterday by the Superintendent.
