CHRISTCHURCH.
This Day. (Before T. W. Maude and J. E. Graham,
Esqrs.)
Robbery. — Albert Olsen and Christian Petersen, two Norwegian sailors, were brought up in custody, ctiarged with having stolen a goose from the premises of Mrs Sullivan, near the Immigration Barracks, on the night of the 17 th inst. Detective Feast proved to examining the place yesterday afternoon, and tracking some footsteps thence to a paddock on the Hamilton Road. Here he found the billy produced, containing the body of a goose ready plucked for cooking, and two swags. They were covered over so as to hide them from view, and the offal from the goose was also discovered near at hand. He watched the spot until 9 p.m., but no one came, and he then left and went again early this morning, when he found the prisoners Bleeping there. They admitted that the swags and billy — for the contents of which latter they made a frivolous excuse — were theirs, and he then took them into custody on a charge of stealing the goose. Other evidence was given, and the case being very clear against them, one of the prisoners remarked that he should not have stolen the goose but that he was hungry. They were both committed to one month's imprisonment at hard labour.
