To the Benevolent. — We have been requested to bring before the notice of our readers the case of Mr Porter's family, who are now left completely destitute. It will be remembered that Mr Porter was drowned in Tyttelton harbour, whilst on his passage from Pigeon Bay to Port, in the p.s. Betsy Douglas, a few weeks since. Subscription lists have been opened by Capt. McLean, and are lying at Mr McDonald's, tailor, and Mr McDonald's, hairdresser, London street, Lyttelton. Mr Pitcaithley, Pigeon Bay, will also receive subscriptions. The Resident Magistrate of Akaroa states that the family were entirely dependent on the father's exertions for their support. We need hardly say the smallest sums will be thankfully received. District Phizes. — The dispute respecting the markiDg on Saturday last has not yet been decided, but the competition will be continued to-day by the corps not represented on that day, members proceeding to Hillsborough by the 10 a.m. train. 'v A Monster Cabbage — Mr S. Jackman, of Salisbury street east, has submitted to our inspection a specimen of this vegetable, which weighed 16lbs, and measured about 15 inches in diameter. It was perfectly sound, very compact, and free from blight. We did not ascertain how it is named, but it will probably be found to be nearly related to the sort known as Drumhead. Volunteer General Committee. — A meeting of the sub-committee appointed to arrange the benefit concert was held at the Zetland Arms Hotel, yesterday afternoon, Major Wilson in the chair. The names of Lieuts. Packer and Giraud, and Cornet Slee j were added to the list of committee-men, and it was resolved to hold a promenade concert in the Drill-shed, on Tuesday next, at million prices, and the programme will be published in a few days. Trade and Commerce in the New British Parliament. — The Grocer says : — Looking at the list of members for the new Parliament, it is startling to notice how strongly trade and commerce are "to the fore," and if we take the City itself, we find that the wholesale colonial trade has an able and efficient advocate in Mr Crawford ; while Mr Peek, who is a city man, though he represents a metropolitan district, has a profound business knowle-igeof the working of a wholesale grocery huuee in connection with an enormous retail trade. Mr Goschen has a marked standing in the monetary and mercantile world ; so lias Mr Bell ; while Mr Alderman W. Lawrence may be called a tradesman in the strictest sense of the word, when we bear in mind his large iron-works in Hoxton. The present Lard Mayor, one of the members for Lambeth, is a builder carrying on the most extensive business operations; and Mr ALlderman Lusk, M. !'. for Finsbnry, conducts a large ships' provision establishment. We could, indeed, multiply instances to show that trade is very fairly and properly r.g resented in the new Parliament. Rifle Association. — A special meeting of the Council of this Association was held at White's Commercial Rooms last evening. Present — Messrs Tancred (chairman), Simmons, Alport, Bishop, Hawkes, Wolfe, Rule* Barnes, Bird, and Allison. Mr Alport read the following report : — " The committee appointed by the Council of the Canterbury Rifle Association to draw up the programme, and to report upon various matters connected with the Easter Meeting 1 869, have to hand in a draft programme which has been carefully prepared for the meeting. The committee beg to recommend that an application be made to the Volunteer General Committee for the use of their rifle range at Hillsborough. On enquiry, the committee find that there are two targets at Hillsborough available for the use of the Association without expense, and that targets for the Distance prize, and the Horatio Ross prize can be prepared at a small cost. The committee are of opinion that the days of firing should be limited to two. The committee have estimated the probable receipts of the Association for the ensuing year to be — eighty subscribers at 10s 6d, £42; entries at meeting, £20; total, £62. From which, deducting probable expenses of advertising, markers, &c, .£2O; will leave forty-two pounds to be given in prizes. The total amount of prizes in the proposed programme, including engraving cups, &0., is estimated to be about £3%. The committee have to recommend that the sum of £5 should be given by the Association as a prize to be shot for at an early date by the Artillery corps of the province. The firing to he at Lyttelton, with field pieces. Edward W. Simmons, H. E. Alport." On the motion of Mr Bishop, seconded by Mr Wolfe, the report was adopted. Mr Alport read the programme for the Easter meeting, which was considered seriatim. The following resolutions were agreed to : — " That the secretary write to the General Volunteer Committee, for the use of their targets, and advertise for markers." " That Mr Bird, Mr John Thompson, Captain Hawkes, and Lieut. Pavitt be appointed a committee, to conduct the arrangements at the meeting." " That Capt. Rookes be umpire, and Lieut.Colonel Packe Commanding Officer at the meeting. The report with regard to the collection of subscriptions was considered very satisfactory.
