•[BY ELECTBIC TELEGBA.PH.] Wellington, March 7, 5.17 p.m. The trial of Whaka Mau, for the murjder of the Danish pedlar JCorncrop, was i concluded at 11 o'clock on Friday night. The prisoner was found guilty andisentenced to death. The AttorneyGreneral prosecuted and Mr Travers defended. The evidence was conclusive, andno doubt exists but that the sentence willbe carried out. X^The Maoris at Otaki accuse a settler named G-oodison of having stolen their cattle and driven them to Wangauui. They therefore seized a mob of Goodison's horses as utu, and, surrounding his house, desired Goodison not to leave until the case had been heard and decided by the Maori' Court, but Goodison managed to escape and get into town. The affair is not of any particular significance, and will no doubt be investigated arid settled satisfactorily The second class militia in Wellington is about to be called out for drill.
