DEPARTURE OF THE GOVERNOR.
The town of Lyttelton was very gay this morning in honour of the Governor. The ships in harbour were gaily dressed, and tbe various stores displayed a large amount of buntirig. Wherever it was possible to erect a flag-staff it was done ; from the Resident Magistrate's Court to the Queen's Hotel a long string of flags were hung, and the ensign floated from the flagstaff in front of the Colonists' Hall. His Excellency birring been invited by the Borough Council to a. dejeuner at the Colonists' Hall, the upper room was prettily decorated, and a platform at; the upper end was provided for ladies. At noon, his Excellency, attended by his suite, his 1 Honor the Superintendent and Executive, his Worship the Mayor of Christchurch, &c, ar- 1 rived in Lyttelton by express train, and was' received on the platform 'by. his .-Worship the Mayor and Councillors, and a guard of honour composed of Lyttelton Volunteer; Artillery under the command of Captain Knowles. The procession was then formed, •and proceeded up Canterbury street, along London. street, and on to the Colonists' Hall, j where his Excellency held an undress levee. The following gentlemen- were presented : — Messrs E. Richardson,, >J. G.Fyfe, J. T. Rouse, H. R. Webb, A. Cuff, D. Robb, M. Stoddart, J. Wilkin, Capt H. H. Knowles, Messr? H. Allwrigbt, E. S. , Ellisdon, J. L Balestieej Rev F. Knowles, Messrs. C 11., •Voledge, <E. A. Hargreaves, K. England, Rev J. M'lntosii, Revsih. Bradley, A. Reid; Messrs T. Merson; .A. M'Laughlin,: A. C. Wilson, H. N.. Nalder; several Maoris were also presented. ...-., His Excellency then proceeded to visit; the Church of England, and also inspected the school,- expressing his pleasure at seeing the children look so well. He afterwards in't spected the gaol. At one o'clock, his . Excellency, returned to the Colonists' Hall to partake of the dejeuner to which he had been invited. .*. As the Borough Council declined to make the usual provision for the representatives; of the Press, we are unable to give a report of the speeches, &c. .
