Tuesday, Dec. 22. i The Council met at the usu .1 hour, i Present : — The Mayor, Councillors Hall, [ .Dudley, Kerr, .Mtd'dletou, Birch, and Newn- ; ham. " • Themumtesof last ordinary meetings and of the aunual meeting, were read and con- ; firmed. - The Clerk read correspondence between , Mr J. Beswick and the Mayor, relative to L the opening of the bridge; he also stated that . he had sent a letter to Mr Burnip with regard ■ to the payment of rent of bridge in arrear. Councillor Hall moved that the Council . does not consider, itself liable for any expenses incurred by Mr Beswick through the , swing portion of the bridge being closed. [ The Mayor suggested that the Council re- . fer him to their solicitor, Mr Wynn Williams. . Councillor Kerr . mored, in replj- to Mr . Beswick's letter, that he 09 referred to the ; Council's solicitor. Councillor Middleton seconded the motion. Councillor Orara was of opinion that Mr ■ Beswick should be requested to sue in the i Kesident Magistrate's Court for any damages he might consider himself to hare sustained . up to the present tinie. : Tiie motion was put to the meeting and : carried. The Clerk rend the report of the Public ! Works Committee. Councillor Kerr proposed, and Councillor , Middleton seconded, that the report be re- • ceived, which was carried. Councillor Middleton proposed, and Councillor Kerr seconded, that the following : accounts be paid :— Mr W. P. Wilsun, auditor's f cc, £\ ; Mr A- Weir, auditor's fee, £1 •> Mr B. Johnston, repairing building, &l ; Mr W ; Burnip, for refreshment at tlie time of . . the : election, £l 17s. .. " ' The Clerk stated : that he hai taken out : summonses for rates due. ; Councillor. Middleton proposed that the well in Cookson 6treet be repaired. . Carried. Councillor Birch handed^up to the Mayor a • written resolution, requesting the Clerk to • inform all members of the Council that a ; special meeting would be held on Tuesday, . Dec. 29, at 7 p.tu ; aho, lay on the table all papers, contracts, and correspondence connected with the bridge dispute. ■ . ■ : : '1 his being signed by the mover and two more councillors, wa9 declared carried.
