This Day. • ■ ■ | The ; election of Mayor for the •■ Borough of Lyttelton took place this morning, {at the Council Chambers. • ;■; ■ f ;' The following Councillors were present : — Messrs Allwright, Willcox, Woledge, , Ward, Hawkins, Hargreaves, and Chalmers. His Worship the Mayor presided. The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. The Mayor then addressed the Councillors He said — Gentlemen, I need not remind you of the business that has brought ha together ; it is the election of a Mayor for the ensuing year. I ara nnaware of your choice, but I think you ought to be unanimous. It would be particularly gratifying to the gentleman who waa elected. Councillor Hargreaves rose arid said he had a gentleman to propose, one who had worthily filled 'ttie' office. ■ He moved that .the present Mayor be the Mayor for the ensuing year. Councillor Willcox said this was the unanimous wish of the Councillors. (Cheers.) •• His I'Worship71 ' Worship 7 said he must emphatically decline the honor. In a few months he might beon his way to England. ; They had the power to elect an outsider, and he trusted •they would" be unanimous in their choice. Councillor Allwright rose and said he would have!been»most bappy to* bave ..supported. tbo re-election of their present Mayor. He would therefore propose that Councillor Willcox be the Mayor for the ensuing year. Councillor Hawkins secorided'fheTnomination. Councillor Hargreaves said he could bear testimony to what had been said respecting Councillor Willcox's services. They had been given not only to the Council; but to the town.

He thanked the Councillors for the honour they had done him. He thought there we're other gentlemen who would have done more credit to their choice. He hoped to carry out the affairs of the Council to their satisfaction. Councillor Hargreaves proposed, and Councillor Ward seconded, a vote of thanks to the retiring Mayor, which was carried unanimously. Mr Merson returned thanks, and the Council adjourned.
