LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Monday, Dec. 7. Present : Councillors England, Allwright, Willcox, Woledge, Ward, Hawkins, Hargreaves, Chalmers; the Mayor presiding. 'The minutes of the former meeting were read and confirmed. The Clerk stated that he had received during the past week: — Rates, £2 6s; Godfrey, £3 15s; Cuff, £11 ss. I he following correspondence was read: — To Mr It. li. Webb, asking permission for water carts to pass over his ground. From Mr Webb, stating that the matter had been referred to Mr Peacock, who said be was afraid it would interfere with tlieir arrangements, but would attend to the matter when he came into Lyttelton. From the Secretary for Public Works, on the water supply, stating that the Gevernment would assist the Council in any way they were able, and tliat their engineer, Mr Thornton, would meet them. The Mayor stated that the Water Committee and himself had had an interview with Mr Thornton, and the result was most satisfactory. Mr Thornton had promised to give the matter his best attention, and he might say that the Government Engineer took a great interest in tbe matter. Councillor Hawkins said, the committee had used every endeavour to obtain water; he might state that obtaining the water from the tunnel would cost upwards of £100. Mr Thornton took the levels and rough plans immediately after the interview. The Council would hear the result in a few days. Letter from Provincial Secretary, acknowledging draft of by-laws, and stating that his Honor had been recommended to allow them, and that they would be published in the Government Gazette. To Mr Holmes, requesting him to remove a fence he had put up across the road. The clerk said it hud been attended to and removed. From Mr W. Graham, asking that the lump posts be secured. Referred to Works Committee. From J. Angus, calling attention to the well iv Dampier's Bay. Referred to Works Committie. The Chairman of the Works Committee stated that there had been only the ordinary work done during the week; there was a speci il report on the well in St David's street. On the motion of Councillor Chalmers, seconded by Councillor Ward, it was resolved
» ' ■ ' that the committee deepen and widen this well. A discusssion followed on the . Municipal Reserves Ordinance. On the motion of Councillor Chalmers, seconded by Councillor Willcox, it was resolved, " That a letter be sent to the Provincial Secretary, pointing out the discrepancy in the Reserves Ordinance, and asking for a short Amendment Act, if necessary, placing their reserves under a clause similar to clause 1. Mr DOyly, solicitor, laid on the table the leaee between the Council and Christ's College. It was assented to by the Council, and was sealed and signed by the Chairman. A discussion took place respecting the width of the proposed road. Cou cillor Ward moved, Councillor Woledge seconded, and it was resolved, " That a letter be written to Mr Pavitt on the subject. The following accounts were passed and ordered to be paid : — Weekly p:iy sheet, £7 4s Od ; W. Austin, lamps, £4 10s ed ; Griffith, carting, £6 3s 9d. It was resolved that the foot-path at the corner of Canterbury street be attended to.
