THE JAPANESE.

Messrs Lenton and Smith's Japanese troupe made its first appearance ia Christchurch last evening, before a large and appreciative audience. To describe the nature of the entertainment with any degree of minuteness would occupy much more space than ia at our disposal; some of the feats are really marvellous, and even beyond what we had been led to anticipate by the accounts in some of our Australian and Southern contemporaries. It was a remarkable feature of the entertainment that everything passed off so smoothly. There was not a mishap from beginning to end, if we are to except a trifling accident sustained by one of the brothers Lenton, but the pluck displayed by the little fellow awakened the sympathy of the audience, and caused, the juvenile performer to forget the fall he met with. The tricks performed by the Japanese are the most skilful that can possibly be conceived, and some of their feats display a strength of muscle that is truly astounding. We confess our inability to describe the entertainment properly; its character is such that it requires one to witness it in order to believe that it is within the power of man to accomplish the various extraordinary things of which it is composed. Erom first to last the performances are wonderfully clever, and while they continue the feeling of the audience is one of intense wonderment. Of its kind, the entertainment outstrips all comparison, and we can only recommend those •who are able to do so, to go to the Town Hall and see for themselves.
