Melbourne, Oqt. 23. There is but little betting for the Melbourne Cup. Sydney Tim is first favourite for the (\ip at about four to one. There is an inclination to lay against the Barb, who is reported as an improbable starter. Little Fish, and Kag Picker ire freely backed ; the former six to oue, and the hittsr ten to one. Both are by long far from right yet. Gulnare is in splendid form, fifteen to one is offerel ; but it is thought however that she cannot go two miles The Ballarat National Show was a great success. Mr Williams, former member for the Eastern province, has been re-elected. Miss St Deuia, the actress, has committe 1 suicide. She took some laudanum on Kriday night, aud died on Saturday morning. Letters were found in her hand addressed to several people; one to Dr Neild, praying him to prevent a post-mortem examination. An inquest was held the tame evening, and she was buried on •Minday. Arrived — Juventa and Nestor, from San Francisco, with large cargoes of wheat. The bread-stuff* ma'ket is very unsettled, raiuactions being only on »>, viost limited scale. Yesterday, Victorian flour, fine samples, was sold at £13 ss. Privately, quotations remain at £13 10s to £14. Wheat is nominally 6s 3d to 6s 6d, but no transactions. I Oats continue firm at 3s 5d to 4s 6d, with occa-ioually a large parcel moving. .Stocks are, however, very large | The prospects of our crops are not of the , best Maize is dull at from 3s 9d to 3s lOd. (Hard'a brandy was soil at auction yesterday [at 6s 3d per gallon. Privately, however, quotations are much higher. Tobacco nnd kerosene are very dull. j The Rakaia arrived at Sydney, and the Suez mail at Adelaide yesterday. The telegrams publishi-d have not affected the ma - kets. Arrived — Laughing Water, frora Lyttelton, and the Omeo, from Hokitika to-day. Sailed— tin the 26th ult, the Zephyr, for Hokitika. Sydney, Oct. 27. A new Ministry has been formed, except an Attorney-General, which office is undecided : — Mr Robertson, Chief Secretary ; Mr Foster, Land Minister ; Mr Samuels, Treasurer ; Mr Sutherland, Pablic Works ; — Mr Egan. Postmaster-General ; Mr Josephson, HolteitorGeneral. The House adjourned to tho Bth December Rain has been general throughout Queensland. CaHfornian letters report that the Gelltoo returns to Australia with breadstuffs. The bulk of the Whistle-'s wheat has been placed privately. The offer made for the Com per'a cargo wns not accepted, and she was ordered on to Melbourne. The Pantaloon has arrived from Chili with 850 tons of breadstuffs. The Bishop of Wellington and Bishop Selwyn hwe arrived per Hero from Auckland. Arrived — Miguelite, from Chili, with 5000 baes of flour and 1400 bags of wheat. Tlie general markt-ts are very dull. Brandies and rums have been dealt in fairly. Martell's brandy, 7h 6d; rum, 4a 2d. The Whistler's wheat brought fis. Flour is q-ioted at £15 10s to £16. The Lubra has arrived at Brisbane with breadstuffs, and has been ordered on to .Sydney. Adelaide, Oct. 27. The Ministry obtained power to dissolve the Assembly, but the Govern >r afterwards withdrew it, and they resigned. Mr Fuller was sent for, and the House adjourned till Friday, to allow him time to form a Ministry. The news from the Barossa diggings is not so favourable. Numbers are leaving, unable to work for want of water. The corn market ia very quiet. Heavy nrrivala iv the neighbouring colonies are preventing trHnßaetions. A *ale of 6,000 bushels of new wheat ia reported to have taken place on Monday at 5s 3d. Another parcel of 5.000 bushels of Port M'Donncll wheat was aold yeaterday for shipment to Eugland at 5s 6d ; fl ur £12 15s to £13 10s. The ship City of Ade aide takes six hundred tons of flour to England.
