This Day. (Before C. C. Bo wen, Esq., R.M.) Vagkancy. — Walter Dowdney was brought up on remand from yesterday, charged with this offence. Sergeant Pardy said he had learnt from enquiries that prisoner had been twice convicted for forgery and uttering, and handed in the Police Gazette, giving a full description of his personal appearance, together with an account of his former proceed ings in the colony. Sergeant Pardy also stated that a telegram had been received from Dunedin, iv answer to one 6ent by th»police yesterday, stating that prisoner had been discharged from gaol there instead of the hospital, as he had affirmed. Prisoner, in reply admitted having been in the gaol, but repeated that he had also. been a patieul in the hospital. He made a rambling statement ac to his after conduct, and ogai urged upon the Bench that lis had offered to work when applying to persons iv Christchurch. He had not in any case solicited assistance, either pecuniary or otherwise. He hud a desire to do that which was r ght, and wished to obtain seitled employment. His Worship said he had not commenced in a manner very indicative of such a desire, for if he had not begged in so many words, be had gone to several persons on the same day, and represented himself as beiug entirely destitute. It had also been ascertained since yesterday tbat he had stated himnelf to be a grocer. Prisoner remarked that he had worked as such in DuneJin. His Worship continued that there could be no doubt as to prisoner being guilty of the offence he was charged with, and a sentence would be passed as would shew that people could not be permitted to come here and carry on iv si.eh a mariner with impunity. He would be committed to one mouth's imprisonment, at hani laliour, and it was to be hoped that when he came out of gaol he would adopt; a different course, and procure proper employment.
