[bt sir_.-___Ri_rE T_i.Eatt_.Pi_.] Wellington, Oct. 2-1, 1.45 p.m. Tlie Wanganui Times' extra of yesterday reports the abandonment for the _econdtimeof Kakaramea. It was immediately occupied by tlie rebels, who set fire to the few remaining houses. Tsventy-four of Captain Hirtzell's company have laid down their arms, refusing to serve longer. The term of the other companies expiring in a few days, thoy intend to follow the example. Von Tempskey's men having also refused to serve, were shipped by the Rangatira to Auckland. These reductions in the force have rendered it prudent to send away the [women and children from Patea. The Sturt accordingly brought them down, together with furniture aud stores, to j "Wanganui, on Thursday. ! Colonel Whitmore has removed the Native Contingent from Wereroa, for- j ward to Patea. J The whole of the country from Kai Iwi (16 miles from Wanganui) to Patea is open to the rebels. XThe sentries at Patea have been fired upon, and seven days' notice has been given by TitoKowharu to the forces to clear 6\j!i_7 An idea is entertained in Wellington that some mistake has been made about the abandonment of Wereroa and leaving the country open. It ie possible that only a portion of the contingent has been removed. The Turakino bridge, hitherto a substantial erection, about 180 feet in leugth, has been officially reported as having been shaken by the late earthquake, and rendered unsafe for heavy traffic. The Government has also received information that the late telegram of the insecurity of the East Coast was founded upon the very exaggerated report of two settlers. The danger is nothing extraordinary.
