Collins were riding from the Wairoa redoubt to Patea, they were fired on by an ambuscade of fifteen or twenty Maoris. On Wednesday, Colonel Whitmore with Mr Booth, left overland. The earthquake on Sunday night injured the chimneys in Wanganui. 7.35 p.m. Napier telegrams state that tbe Star of the South has returned without the women from Wairoa,' who refused to leave. The danger to the township is exaggerated, but several settlers' abandoned houses have been plundered, probably by the friendly Natives. Messrs Richmond and M'Lean are gone on to the East Cape, Mr Ormond acting as agent for the General Government in the meantime.
