The Stars. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1868.

♦ The unanimity, earnestness, aud good feeling displayed at the meeting held last night, for the purpose of discussing the subject of the direct road to Riccarton, through Hagley Park, promise well for the ultimate success of the movement. And the amount already subscribed, by only- a few of those interested in the matter, is a further earnest of the spirit with which the subject has been taken up. Much, however, remains to be done, aud those gentlemen who were selected as a working committee have no easy task before them. But there is every reason to believe that they will be diligent and persevering, and that they will reap the reward of their labours iv seeing this very desirable object accomplished withiu a reasonable time. That they will receive the hearty support of their fellow citizens cacnot be doubted. The work is one iv which all ought to feel interest. We have heard it said that the proposed road would injure the appearance of Hagley Park. Those who are induced to take this view cannot, we think, have given much consideration to the subject. It might with greater force be urged that the road from the Hospital to Dillo way's destroys the appearance of the Park ; yet no one will venture to say that it does. The fact is, so far as we can judge from an examination of a traciug showing the proposed line of road, that the Park would be very materially benefited in every way. A new, and, if properly managed, very handsome approach to the city would be provided ; aud the convenience of the public would be greatly iucreased. All things considered, we do not hesi-' tate to say that the completion of the new road ought to command the substantial aid of the public.
