CRICKET.

_ — + The season was formally opened, on Saturday last, by the U.('.C.C, ii a match with the College. Some little practice has already been indulged in, but during the present month it will become general throughout the province. The Albion Club intend breaking up and levelling their portion of Hagley Park, whilst at Kaiapoi and Leithfield efforts are being made to procure better ground than those of last year; and in Kangiora a resuscitation of the old club is to be attempted. The match on Saturday being with Collegians pastand present, temporarily withdrew several of the best men from the club, and will, there is little doubt, result in defeat of the Intter. In every respect they were overmatehtd, and it will require more than ordinary good fortune to retrieve the lost ground. The weather was very unfavourable to the game, a cold south west wind completely nullifying the effects of brilliant sunshine, and preventing anything like lively fielding or good bowling. It had also the ffdet of limiting the attendance of spectators, although the pavilion and a tent were available for shelter. There were certainly very few on the ground, and even these were eiih r connected with the club or college. The wicket was in excellent trim, considering the earliness of the season, and Bhowed that neglect had not prevailtd during the rece!>9. Half-past one had been appointed for coinmtneing, bat it was almost an hour later before the club, having lost the toss, took to the fieM, and Messrs A. Ollivier and Condell appeared at the stumps on behalf of the College. Hurley bowling with the wind, delivered the first over, in which from carelessness or want of practice in fielding, ten runs were scored from byes and overthrows. The most noticeable play of the innings was that of Messi*s Ollivier and Cotterill. The score of the former amounted to GO,- consisting of 1 five, 1 four, 5 threes, 10 twos, and 1 6 singles, while that of the latter comprised 3 fours to leg, 3 twos, and 4 singles — 22. The wickets fell rapidly after these bats had been disposed of, and the innings of the College closed for 126. The innings of the club was commenced by Messrs Blakiston and Worthy at the wickets to the bowling of T. Moore and E. Parkerson. There was nothing in the play worthy of special mention, as from the firstit was evident that the team was not up to the mark, whilst the fielding of the College eleven was much superior to that of the TJ.
