-♦ [bt submakike tele&baph.J Wellington, Oct. 9, 7-43 p.m. Mr Stafford said in the House of Representatives to-day that compensation could not at present be awarded to the Patea settlers for the property abandoned, because the House had not authorised any ; but the Government would make inquiry into the matter, and lay the result on the table next session. The House then proceeded to business, which is being rapidly despatched. By Cobb's coacb to-night intelligence was received that Tauroa and the whole of the friendly Pakakobi had gone over to Tito Kowhara. A small redoubt at Kakaramea, close to Patea, had been attacked three times on Monday night, but the post was held, the rebels being driven off. Tauroa was much trusted by the civil authorities. This Day, 9.19. Mr Greorge Macfarlan, M.H.R. for Lyttelton, died at the Club shortly before midnight. He had been ill for a week with gastric fever. The announcement of Mr Macfarlan's death, in the House, created the profoundest sorrow. The Ballot Bill has been thrown out by tbe Legislative Council by 9 to 5.
