ADEQUATE POLICE PROTECTION.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAE. Sir, — Some short time since, the citizens of Christchurch were annoyed by a gang of mischievous [persons* patrolling the streets at night and breaking severn I valuable squares of glass, amongst others, tl> >se in the Council Chamber. Previous to these wanton outrage*, the carvings at the Wesleyan Church were also destroyed. Last night this species of amusemeut took another form. In the vicinity of Cranmer Square, several gates were removed from their hinges and either thrown into some neighbour's garden, or carried away entirely, thus leaving the premises open to any stray cattle, and putting the victims to great inconvenience and loss of time'to-day, endeavouring to hunt up their lost property. Surely the police will take some notice of all this, if not, it would be as well for those whose property has been destroyed, to try and discover these cowardly Tom and Jerry's and make an example of them, and the punishment I should recommend, would be a thorough good horse whipping. Your obedient servant, ONE OF THE SELECTED. Oct. 6, 186 S.
