Larceny.— Daniel Toner, on remand from Otago, was brought up charged with having stolen a money order from Benjamin Bulmer, at the Rakaia Forks in January, 1867. Inspector Pender said prisoner had given the name of Turner when arrested, but there was no doubt as to bia being tbe man named in the warrant. The police were unprepared to go on with the case, as witnesses were not in attendance, and he would a* for a remand until Wednesday next. His Worship granted the request, and prisoner declined to make any statement. Refusing to support his Family. — W. Collins was brought up in custody charged with refusing to support his wife* and child. Informant stated her case, and the child said that, although prisoner had taken food home during the past week, he had occasionally left them short. It also appeared that they had been supported by the Government daring. his absence from the province. Prisoner, in defence, said he always provided food when he was in work, and had no intention of deserting his family. He could scarcely get anything cooked at home, and himself and wife had quarrelled several times. Several witnesses, including Mr D. M'Kay, gave evidence to the effect that informant was of a very hasty temperament, and his Worship, remarking that the whole was evidently the result of a quarrel, dismissed the case. He at the same time, however, cautioned prisoner not to make use of the statement imputed to him by his wi cc under any circumstances, and to always provide for her.
