Larceny from a Dwelling House.-— Samuel and Klizabeth Pulton were brought up in custody charged with this offence Detective Feast saH in accurd ince with » search warrant, he went to Lutge'a dining rooms, in igh street, and found the tab : t cloth, wearing apparel, ami other articles produced. The prisoners were present, and claimed them as their property. In a house in Barba toes street, rentod by them, he alb;) found some other articles. CVonjl Brett called, identified the property as )\U, and said that the prisoners had been in his service near the Courtenay. They left nbnut Qve weeks ago, and shortly aftet he missed v number of articles of whi<h those in Court were a portion. The remainder he had not since seen. By the female prisoner : He could most decidedly swear that the articles proau :ed were his property. By the Bench ; The male prisoner left about 10 days btf >re hi« wife. At that time he gave the name of Wiiliam«, and first went to witness' residence to see the female prisoner who had been working there some time previous, and wlunn he stared to be his sister, lie was working on the premises about a month.j> In defence, the male prisoner deniei having taken the articles, and stated he paid his addresses to the female prisoner on the voyage out in tiic Gainsborough and on landing they agreed 10 pass as brother »nd sister under the name ol Williams, until they could save a little money to get married with. On returning toChristchurch, they were married, and he assumed i his proper natfig. His Worship said he had i no doubt that"the articles had been stolen — i the table cloth plainly bearing Colonel Brett's name — but he would pass a lenient sentence in consequence of it being their first appearance, and in the hope that it would be a ■ warning to them. They would he committed to one month's imprisonment at hard labour t each.
