COLLEGE SPORTS.
These annual festivities commenced this morning in Hagley Park, and ware concluded on the College groand in the afternoon, but too late to permit of all the particulars being given in our present issue. The early part of the morning was not very favourable to outdoor recreation, more especially in such unsheltered places as Hagley Park, but the games were si ill attended with a very satisfactory success. The strong south-west wind was very annoying during the races, but the zest of the boys was in no way diminished, and the only matter for regret was a rather scanty attendance of spectators as compared with former occasions. The close cut turf of the cricket ground, kindly lent by the U.C.C.C., formed a splendid race course, and a number of coloured flags showed the boundaries with the requisite distinctness. The shortnesi of the grass also proved a further boon, preventing the discomfort which would have resulted in an ordinary p>iddock. The course was marked out in a circular form, of 440 yards in circumference, and could not have been excelled for the purpose. All tbe races were closely contested, and, as will be seen, excellent time was made in each, notwithstanding the serious obstruction to rapid progress by the wind. The following are the events decided up to the time of going to press, with the list of winners : — 100 Yards, open to the whole school. (Six competitors.) Chapman, T 1 Rutherford, D 2 1 00 Yards, for boys under 14 years. (Seven competitors.) Cotterill, H 1 Lee, L 2 880 Yards, for boys under 11 years. (Two competitors.) Rutherford, E. 68 yards. ±j Stiffe, A. walking Kaoe; two miles; open to the whole school. (Furiy competitors.) Barker* F. 1 Gould, C. 2 Time, 22 uiiu. 20 sec. This wa,'. the most enjoyable event of the sports. The competitors were of all sizes, and the rri inner in which some of the younger ones pi-gj-ed merrily away by the side, and even in mlv.-m.'c of their taller comrades, was pp.: ticularly amusing. The field soon became scattered,' and when two or three laps had been passed over, it was difficult to tell who was the leader. C. Gould, not more than half the size ot s >me of the competitors, took the lead nt the corumenceuicnt, and wan only passed by the ti jriiiner — a much taller boy — in the last round. / 7 aailiaifeiji-i---.ii ii— em— aim ii
