GOLD IN TARANAKI.
The Taranaki Herald of Sept. 19, says :— ! We mentioned last week that gold had been discovered in a piece of quartz which had been picked up on the beach at Oakura, from which thirteen specks of gold had been obtained. On Tuesday last Mr Way being out in that direction, picked up another piece of quartz which appeared to be thickly impregnated with some yellow metal. He brought it into town with him, and after shewing it to several persons, a small piece was crushed, when amongst the dust three or four specks of gold were visible. Mr Humphreys took the remainder of the stone and crushed it in a mortar ; it waa then washed, and several specks of gold discovered, which was extremely fine. Mr Creighton (the Provincial Secretary of Auckland), while on shore from the Phoebe on Wednesday last, was shewn some of the quartz which bas been obtained from the Kaitake ranges, and spoke in very favourable terms of it, and likewise explained to sooie of our amateur diggers the way to calcine the quartz before crushing it. Three parties are already out in the Kaitake ranges, and from Mr Ford, who returned last week from there, we hear a very good account of that district. We are glad to see the energy displayed by these private prospecting parties, and are convinced if they persevere, and thoroughly prospect the ranges from whence the Oakura river rises they will discover what they are looking for.
