The body was brought up, and it was then ascertained that the helmet had become unfastened. 7.30 p.m. A private letter states that out of the fourteen men killed in the recent engagement, five are friendly natives. Surgeon Best is also among the killed, and most of the dead were left where they fell. The force started at 3 a.m., returning to camp at 11 p.m. Several tenders have been received for raising the Taranaki, of from £5000 to £7000, but the Company to take nearly all risks.
