DISASTROUS BATTLE WITH THE NATIVES. [bt sub_ia.bine telegraph.] [The following telegram gives fuller particulars than we were iv a position to publish yesterday.] "Wellington, Sept. 9, 1.31 p.m. The Wanganui Times, just received by the Sturt, has the following native intelligence : — On Monday, our forces left Waihi at 4 a.m., and at 2 p.m. encountered the enemy at Te-Ngutu-o-te-mauu, but this time they were thoroughly prepared to give us a warm reception. Not only were there rifle pita occupied by the enemy, but the tops of the trees were manned, from which deadly volleys were poured in upon the advancing force. Our men bravely pushed forward, cheered on by their officers, and returned the fire with great effect. Twentyseven Maoris were killed, bub how many were wounded was not known. Our force retired in good order, and was preparing for another attack. Most of our men were killed by Hauhaus perched on the tops of trees. The colony will grieve to hear that Major Von Tempsky is dead, but he fell nobly in battle. The brave Captain Buck, aud his equally brave fellow-officers Captain Palmer, Lieutenant Hastings, and Lieutenant Hunter, are also amongst the killed. Lieutenant Rowan has been dangerously wounded. The names of the fourteen men killed are not recorded in the brief intelligence to hand. 7.47 p.m. A brief despatch from Colonel M-Donnell only reports a " severe enf gagement," giving no particulars as to tho object or the strength of the expedition. There are fourteen men killed, besides officers, and twenty - four wounded.
