CITY COUNCIL CUP.

The annual competition for the silver cup given by Mr Bishop when chairman of the City Council, took place at Hillsborougb, on Saturday la*t. The interest previously evinced in contests for its ownership had in no way diminished; and although one or two indifferent scores were maiie, the shooting tvtiS, on the whole, of a very creditable nature. From the first, the squads selected were indicative of a cloße contest, but a sligkt preference was awarded to that representing No j 6 company of rifles, which the result showe not to hare been misplaced. That No. 2 oompany, who held the prize, would not maintain their supremacy, and thus establish their right to retain it as private property, appeared to be a foregone conclusion; but in justice to them it should be mentioned that they competed at some disadvantage by one of the squad not being present when the firing commenced, which necessitated a member originally told off as a murker to fire in j iis place., and that with a rifls never previously used. As it was, bowerer, they came in second, and this being the first time No 6 has secured the trophy, they have still a chance to win it. The weather on Saturday could scarcely have been more favourable in any respect, the sun shining brightly without dazzling the eye, and the light wind wheh prevailed some part of the time rendering but little judgment in windage allowance necessary. The targets were in beautiful order, and shewed with unusual clearness against the hill sidts, and the only circumstance which can be said to luve detracted from the general satisfaction of the competitors was the large quantity of water lodging on the ground at the longer ranges. Some inconvenience, and dissatisfaction having resulted at previous competitions from the late termination of the firing, the competitors on this occasion were divided into two squads, comprising an equal number of representatives in each, and firing respectively at 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. By this arrangement everything was done without confusion or haste, and the general committee certainly deserve credit for their forethought. In the morning squad No. 6 Company, which was represented by Corporal Paton and Private Jackson took the lead by fourteen points and maintained it in the afternoon although No 2, who were last in the morning's firing, successively passed the other companies, and gained four points on them, finally coming in an easy second.
