Russell arrived in harbour yesterday from Auckland ; left on the 23rd, and experienced southerly -weather during the whole of the passage. The s.s. The Beautiful Star sailed for Wanganui yesterday afternoon at 3 p.m. The s.s. Rangatira arrived in harbour this morning, at 3 o'clock ; left Port Chalmers afc 8 on Friday morning, arriving at Oamaru at 11.20 a.m.; left at noon, and arrived as above. Experienced fine weather during the passage. We are obliged to the purser for files. We are sorry to record an accident which occurred this morning, to one of the lumpers, named Thomas Wilson, employed on the ship Light Brigade to discharge cargo. It appears that a sling full of casks of beer was being raised, when hy some means tbe winch was let go without the burden hook being atattached. The consequence was that the whole sling came down upon him. The man was stooping to pick up an empty sling and the casks struck him, knocking Idm down. Had he been standing up he must have been instantly killed. !he sufferer was brought on shore, and Dr Rouse was quickly in attendance, who, upon examination, found that tbe right leg was broken just below the knee. He recommended the man to be taken to the hospital. >[_ Tnu clipper schooner Mary Ann Christina arrived in harbour at noon this day from the Fiji Islands, after a passage of 24 daysvj, left Wellington on July 12 ; made the East Cape m 10 days; arrived at Eoua onthe 23rd, and Ovalau on the 26th."' On arriving, found the natives in a very disaffected state. The man-of-war Challenger was there, and three of their boats had burned one of the villages in retaliation for an attaok upon the white ' population, all of . whom had left Rewa and comedown to Ovalau7 The Swallow, schooner, arrived at Ovala-a-4! days before the Mary Ann Christina. Left Ovalau on the 7th Aug., and Wakawaia on the 12th ; sighted East
Cape on Saturday last, 10 days out ; experienced strong gale from N.W., from East Cape to Cape Palliser. This part of the passage was made in 42 hours. On Monday last, at 7.30 left Cape Palliser, and ran down to Amuri with a strong N.W. gale. On Monday night the wind chopped round suddenly to S.W. ; had to heave-to for 2 days. During the passage the vessel has been hove-to, off and on, 9 days. Since Thursday, experienced light winds and heavy squalls, wind sometimes strengthening to a gale, and suddenly dying away. The vessel brings a cargo of lemons and cocoa nuts.
