EXODUS OF SETTLERS FROM POVERTY BAY.
\The Vuckland Herald of. Aug 28 contains the following : — The schooner Tawera, which arrived in harbour yesterday morning from Poverty Bay, brings up twenty-five passengers — settlers who have been compelled to desert their homesteads in consequence of the present disturbances caused by the presence of the escaped Maori prisoners, aud the hostile attitude of some of the tribes. We understand that the whole of the militia force of the district was under orders to turn out for active service on Monday last, after which date no settler would be allowed to leave the district. Should this state of things continue much longer in the North Island, wa cm entertain but faint hopes of the development of our agricultural resources for years to come. No furher actual fighting bad taken pUce when the Tawera left.
