TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.
Km,— -There is one point which has not as yet been touched upon by your correspondents. What is tho legal status of any of the companies in Chrlstohurch ? Tills is an important question, and I aw-lcd to put it by what occurred in tho Supreme Court at tho trial ot tho arson ease. Tho judge distinctly stated that ho could not admit tho polioy in question as ovidonco, and that no secondary ovldonco could bo given of it. This ef course roforrod to one company only} but might not others bo in a similar predicament ? Presuming, then, a polioy to bo invalid in a legal BonßO, tho company paying monoy under it could recover by civil action. But tho law has an awkward knack of working both ways, and, if monoy can bo recovered by a company, paid undor an invalid polioy, tho deduction is that all premiums paid under such a polioy oan bo recovered from tho company. -Several neighbours of mine, to whom I havo imparted the abovo aro very busy calculating what amount thoy havo paid in premiums, and if you think that wo havo any ohanco wo shall subscribe a good fee for a sharp practltlonor , and try the -question for lhe J\m of the Ihin'a. xour obodient servant, URIAn HEEP.
