UNDERWRITERS OPPOSE UNIONISM
NOT IN THE INTERESTS OF VOLUNTEER FIREMEN
The question of unionism was uppermost in the minds of all wTio were interested in the fire service, said Mr -A. L. Garbett, representative of the Uundrwriters' Association, in a brief address to the United Fire Brigades’ Association conference -at llawera. His association opposed unionism not only on its own behalf but also because it was felt that it would not be in the interests of volunteer liretnen.
A vast amount of work had been put into the draft Fire Service Bill, lie continued, and . it was disappointing to know that it appeared to be in the course of being "scrapped. The pioposed legislation would have given underwriters power to be ot greater service to brigades, especially to the smaller organisations, together with help from the Government and local bodies. It was hoped that this provision would be included in new legislation -and that the legislation be placed before Parliament as soon as possible.
