Te Puke Retains “Wog” Cooney Cup

ANNUAL POST OFFICE FIXTURE HIGH SCORING MATCH WITH TAURANGA x The annual inter - Post Office cricket match for the “Wog” Cooney Cup between Te Puke and Tauranga took place on Jubilee Park during the weekend. The members of both sides thoroughly enjoyed the informality oft the fixture and the local side were successful in retaining the trophy .

Batting first, Tauranga compiled the Useful score of 152 runs (Curtis 42, Belcher .77 not out, including sixf6’s). K. Ball and B. Sargent secured the best bowling figures of five wickets for 15 runs and five for 41 respectively/, Te Puke were dismissed for 161 runs in the first innings. B. Sargent (35), I. Farquhar (25), K. Ball (35) scored Weil, and C. Muir (27 not out) , aridjM. Dingle (9) Were associated in a partnership which gave Te Puke a comfortable lead. T. Pickett proved successful at, a bowler, capturing seven wickets for! G 9 runs. . ! In the second innings, each side batted for three-quarters of an hour snd the bowling generally was severely punished. Tauranga made 52 (K. Ball, four wickets for 17 runs, T. Harrison, four wickets for 17 runs), and Te Puke 145 runs (E. Clark 18, W. Roberts 34, Hopkins 21, K. Ball 25 retired, being ;he prinicipal run-getters).
